I have been writing all month about how to create your own real estate website from scratch using WordPress. In this post I want to show you how to add pages. Before I do that let’s chat about the six pages you should include on your real estate website. I will also highlight the best type of content to put on these pages.
The home page of any website is the hardest to do. You want to say everything to attract potential buyers and sellers, but research has proven that you should do the exact opposite. Keep the home page simple and uncluttered with a lot of white space. Right now slideshows are very popular on websites yet they are so hard to do! Some of the most popular real estate websites include a slideshow with photos from the agent’s area. Another idea is to do one landscape photo of your area. Just make sure it is clean and it is easy to read the text on the home page.
Things you can put on the home page include:
- A simple welcome message to website visitors
- Search for homes area
- Graphics linking to featured areas of your website
- Recent blog posts but only if they are actually recent
A lot of agents will have a list of current homes for sale. I personally am not a fan of this. I think it makes the home page look cluttered. The more simple, clean and sophisticated your home page looks, the more people will stick around and look at it.
Did you know that the about page on a website is the most viewed page on a site? Did you also know that it is usually the worst one written? About pages are so uncomfortable to write aren’t they? Most people come off as either sounding too stuffy or really don’t say anything. About pages are so hard to write!
Tips for a great about page include:
- Research about pages that you like. Write yours in a similiar fashion
- Always write in the first person. Use I and me, not your name and he/she
- Include photos of you and more than just your professional head shot
- Tell your story. Tell why you got into real estate and why being an agent means so much to you
- Do a fun Q&A or FAQ about you on your about page
For Buyers & For Sellers
These two pages on real estate websites seem to always be filled with the same canned content. Do something different! People will know that you work with buyers and sellers when they visit your website. Instead of stating that on these pages do something fun. Include a list of top 10 questions buyers and sellers ask you and give answers. Add case studies of how you have helped buyers and sellers through tough situations. Include scrolling testimonials on these pages. Then create a bullet point of the type of buyer or seller that you work with on these pages. This kind of extra content will stand out!
I think a resource page is a great way for agents to build credibility with prospects and get people to come back to your site. A good resource page will provide useful information that people can use over and over.
Ideas for a resource page include:
- Frequently asked real estate questions
- Community events
- Reviews of restaurants and establishments in your area
- List of favorites: books, wine, products
The resource page is a page that will help people. Some of that help should be educational, some should be fun. The main point is to help people that visit this page. They will appreciate it and trust you!
Client testimonials are an important part of any marketing strategy. This is especially true on a website. This is how prospects know that you are a real person that has helped real people. It gives you credibility. When you add testimonials don’t add paragraph after paragraph of text. Include photos of the client if you can or quotes to make it stand out. Add a horizontal line break between each testimonial. If possible include scrolling testimonials throughout your website.
The contact page is a critical page on your site! Most contact pages look the same which makes sense. There isn’t a lot that needs to be included on the page!
Things you need to make sure that are on the page are:
- Phone number
- Email Address
- Photo of you
I also suggest including a contact form on your website. It makes it easy for prospects and clients to get in touch with you. As a bonus I would add a map and directions to your office on the contact page.
Are there other pages you should add? Sure. Pages like search for homes, blogging, newsletter sign up and frequently asked questions are all great pages for your website. But in my opinion the above pages are must haves for every real estate website.
How to Create Pages on WordPress
1. Change the Permalinks
First things first, log into the dashboard for your WordPress website. Before you create your first page you will want to change the permalinks. By default WordPress assigns a number to any page or post you create. It then places the number and the month and year you created the page in the URL of the page or post. For navigational and SEO purposes you don’t want that to happen.
To not have this happen you will need to change the permalinks to custom. To do this go to Settings–>Permalinks–>. Then select Post Name to permanently change the URL to the title of your page.
2. Create Your First Page
Then go to Pages on the left hand side. A drop down will appear. Select Add New.
3. Add the Title, Content and Images
Add the title of your page in the large white box. This title is what the name of the URL will be for this page. For example, my about page is titled About and my URL is http://marketingideasforagents.com/about. You will want to do this for every page you create. At the end of this post I will include a list of basic pages you should create.
Underneath the title is a big white box. This is where you need to type the content for the page. WordPress gives you basic bold, italics, quotes, alignment and bullets to work with for formatting. If you want to add things like color or headings I recommend installing the Tiny MCE Plugin. If you want to add a picture click the Add Media button.
4. Select a Page Template (optional)
Some real estate themes will give you the option to change the page style. You can have the page fit the full width of the screen or you can have sidebars. I have sidebars on all of my pages so I can put my info, email sign-up and popular posts on the right hand side. If you want something similar you may need to change the page template. The instructions included with your theme should tell you if you need to do this. If you have questions on this please feel free to ask me!
5. Featured Image (optional)
On some themes you will have the option to add a featured image to a page. This is typically done with blog posts but you can do it on regular pages too. If you look at the top of this blog post you will see an image with the word update. That is a featured image. To add a featured image click the link at the right. A pop up will open asking you to upload an image or select an image from your WordPress media files.
6. Hit Publish
When you are finished adding the title, content and images scroll back to the top and look for the blue publish button or the preview button. If you want to test your new page before publishing it click the preview button. When you are ready to publish your page click the publish button.
That’s it! That is all you need to do to create a page on your brand new real estate website If you have questions about this process or any that I have gone over in this series please reach out to me! Follow the steps with each new web page you publish.
Create Navigation Menu
Now that you have created your website pages you will need to create a navigation menu. Follow these steps to create your navigation menu!
1. Go to Appearance—>Menus
2. Click Create a New Menu.
3. Then give it a name and then click Create Menu.
4. Next click the View All button under pages. Put a check mark next to the pages you want to add. Click Add to Menu.
5. You can then drag and drop the order of the pages. If you want to create a drop down item simply drag the menu item to the right to make it drop down under a main menu item.
6. If you want to rename a page for a navigation menu different than what it is titled click once on the menu item. This will open a drop down. Then you can change the name. It will save once you save the menu.
7. Then select where you want to install the menu on your site. This will vary per theme but usually it is the “main” navigation. Select that menu and click Save Menu.
Your navigation menu is now set! If you have any questions about this process please contact me. I am here to help!
