Last week I had the pleasure of reading Debra Trappen’s first book “Fire Up! Taking Your Life and Business to 11…” When I started reading the book it became clear to me that this book was going to make me rethink the way I saw my business. What I didn’t realize until the end was that this book would also change my life.
All too often in our lives we separate the business life from the personal life. Meaning we are one person when we have our business hat on and another person when we have our personal hat on. I think more and more our culture is starting to challenge that status quo. Social media has been an important part of that transformation.
In Debra’s book she challenges that traditional concept. She encourages people to discover their “Core Four” values. The goal is to live your life both personal and business in alliance with these four core values. What I liked best about this chapter is that Debra lists statements like “My house is in chaos- the dishes and laundry are piling up as I speak.” This and several other statements she made in this chapter really hit home with me. For many months now I have been wondering if I am existing to live or just existing. Examining my core values in this section made me realize that I need to do a better job of enjoying life both personally and professionally.
So what does this have to do with real estate and real estate marketing? Everything! If you aren’t living in alignment with your core values you can’t discover your niche. If you aren’t working in your niche you are working to please everyone and someone is suffering. Most likely that person who is suffering is you.
In order to have success in business you have to know who you are. What you stand for and what your personal brand is all about. In this book Debra kindly but firmly pushes the reader to do just that. She pushes you to take the time to slow down and discover who you are. How that impacts your message and what you are putting out there to clients.
Once you have done the work Debra gives you practical tips about how to take this information online and spread your message. Too often real estate agents just “throw up” their message on social media. You know the ones I am talking about.
Their posts look like this:
- Just sold a house in the Prospect neighborhood. Who’s next?
- Interest rates are low! Buy a house before rates go up!
- Spent all day showing houses to buyers. So tired but love my job! #lovemyjob
- Here’s my new listing at 1234 Main Street. Please share now!
These my friends are not marketing messages. These are posts from people that don’t know their personal brand. These are messages from people that don’t know how to use social media to help others and promote their own brand. If this message sounds all to familiar I strongly recommend that you read Debra’s book to get clear on your message.
Why I like the book
Like I mentioned in the beginning of this post I think this book will be a game changer for me. Over eight months ago I quit doing the business I have done for the last eight years to focus on this blog. Then this spring I worked on how I would monetize this new venture. It is something that I am still not 100% clear on. I will tell you this book has helped to change that for me.
First this book made me realize that I am still not 100% clear on my services. It also made me realize that I must do a better job of defining my personal brand, what I stand for and what I am about. It also made me feel better knowing that I do have a lot to offer those in the real estate community. I read this book for the content and am excited to go back through and read it with action. Debra provides several worksheets for the reader to use to get clear about their message and their brand. I am excited to do the worksheets to see where they take me, my life and my business.
The other reason I love this book is because Debra Trappen is one of the most genuine and engaging people that I have ever gotten to know. She cares about people and is always looking to provide inspiration and encouragement to those around her. This book is a wonderful compilation of her message!
Who this book is for
This book is for the person who:
- feels overworked, overtired and burnt out.
- wonders if there is more to their business than the way it is now.
- wants to shake things up in the real estate industry and do something different.
- thinks finding a niche could be fun but has no idea how to do it.
- needs to figure out how to align their business persona with their real estate persona.
- wants to change their business but doesn’t know where to start.
- is new to their business and wants to get started on the right foot.
Most importantly this book is not for those that want an easy way out. Debra kindly pushes people to challenge their current business and their life so that they live in harmony together. This book will give you the push and the confidence you need to shake things up. If you are worn out from your current lifestyle it is time to light the flame and fire up your life! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by stepping out of your comfort zone and taking a chance!
