The beginning of the month is here which means it’s time for “what worked” and “what didn’t work” for business this month! My goal with this post is to be transparent with you about what I am doing to market my blog and services. I hope you can relate my ideas to your business and use these them to grow your business!
First let’s take a look at the numbers.
Stats for February
|Returning Visitor %||41.26%||34.72%||42.79%||+8.07%|
I am excited about all these numbers, even the pageviews. I didn’t hit my pageviews goal for this month but I am still proud of the final number. The blog had a lot of great traffic this month and it shows in the numbers! Now let’s get to how that happened.
In February I was fortunate to have two guest posts published on Inman. One about millennials and one about why I like email marketing better than social media. Guest posting on Inman is an amazing opportunity for me and drives a lot of traffic to my blog. I am incredibly thankful for that! This month 30% of my new visitors for the blog came from Inman. That is great!
Takeaway: Don’t spread your message only on your own website. Network with other people in your industry to share their message and your message. It’s better when you can work together!
Consistent Email Marketing
Every Monday in February my newsletter subscribers got an email from me with the new post for that day. Then every Thursday (or Friday) they get a new post plus valuable marketing tips. In the marketing tips email I also include links to related blog posts for each tip. This helps increase my pageviews and the visitors to my site. I am providing great content and am showing up consistently in my subscribers’ inboxes. I am averaging a 45% open rate on my emails which is pretty good!
I also tried something new with an email I sent out at the end of the month. I sent an email on Thursday the 19th with my new post and the marketing tips. A few days later I sent the same email again to people who did not open my email. That increased my open percentage to 56% which is huge for email marketing. I recommend you trying the same thing.
Takeaway: Stay consistent with email marketing and provide valuable content. Also a few days later resend the email to people who didn’t open the original email. Try a different headline to see if that helps.
Consistent Social Media
I would say for about 95% of the month I was consistent in posting on social media. I post on Twitter and Facebook six times a day and LinkedIn four times a day. Also on Twitter I will throw out random comments here and there. Social media counted for 31% of my total sessions for February so it is helping the blog grow. I would like to see more shares and retweets on social media. I also know that my small following on Pinterest and LinkedIn is contributing to my blog’s growth. I think there is less competition and more opportunity for my message to get seen.
I also did something different this month. I started to connect with industry leaders on Facebook. That has been fun getting to know these folks! They post a lot of information that is helping me to learn more about the real estate industry.
Takeaway: I need to figure out how to get more shares and retweets on Facebook and Twitter. The couple lonely pins on Pinterest are seeing a lot of activity and shares. I need to figure out how to have those same kind of results on the other two sites. Also posting consistently on the social sites is very hard and sometimes tedious. But it shows people that I am here and consistently here.
A Milestone: 1,048 Pageviews in One Day
On Thursday, February 19th I hit a major milestone. I had 1,048 pageviews on the blog in one day! This is incredible and it was humbling to me. I was blown away when I saw this number. Keep in mind that I average about 100 pageviews a day. Maybe 200 pageviews a day when I have a guest post that is published. So this was a big deal!
Two factors went into hitting this milestone:
1. I had a guest post go live at Inman the day before. My post went live around 2pm cst and Inman started to promote it a lot on Thursday. At the bottom of my Inman post is a link back to a landing page on my website. Around 424 of my pageviews for that day came from Inman.
2. I published a really, really personal post that day. A post that was incredibly hard to write but I wanted to try something new. I posted it on my personal social media page and that helped my pageviews.
I would love to hit 1,000 pageviews everyday! It is a lot of hard work but I know if I keep working at it that it will happen. That was such a great day!
Takeaway: Guest posting is key to growing my blog especially in the real estate industry. Also my content is key. I need to work on more marketing tips plus good authentic posts.
Custom Landing Pages
In February I created two different landing pages for visitors from Inman News. One for millennials and one for email marketing. The results from these two pages were great for new email subscribers! For the first page, the millennials, I had 32 email subscribers in one week! Then I got another shock. The email marketing landing page netted me 54 new email subscribers in just four days! These numbers are incredible for an email opt-in! In fact I wrote a post about this for Inman that they are publishing today. I worked very hard on these landing pages and the opt-ins. To have this pay off in this way was exciting for me!
Takeaway: Landing pages do work and are a great way to turn visitors into email subscribers. I have written a free report on 24 steps to maximize your landing page. I also am guest posting about this topic on both Inman News and KatieLance.com. Check out both these posts for more ideas from me on landing pages!
In the second week of February I pushed live my consulting services. I was nervous but excited for the potential opportunities to work with new clients! I did a one hour “Ask Jen” session with a new client and a website review with another. I had a great time working with these clients! I am looking forward to adding more consulting clients in the coming months.
Takeaway: I love working with consulting clients! I feel like I am at my best when I am helping people. Do what you love and you never work another day in your life right?! Is there a niche you want to spend more time working with in real estate? A niche that makes you feel fulfilled? Then go after those clients and fine tune your marketing to meet their needs!
What Didn’t Work
No Blog Education
Once again I did not do any of my blog training class that I signed up for at the end of December. I am beyond frustrated with myself about this. I know I need to start this course to grow my blog. I need to make this course a priority.
Takeaway: I have to make this education a priority. It has to be the first thing I do every morning after my social media is scheduled. I am going to build this into my schedule for March.
Missed My Page Views
My goal for February was to double my pageviews from January. I have done this every month I started blogging. This meant for February I would need to hit 7,572 pageviews. I realized early in the month that this wasn’t going to happen and I got frustrated. I also got a little down. Then I realized that to hit that number I would have to average 270 pageviews a day. That is unrealistic when I average 100 pageviews a day. Even with my milestne of 1,048 pageviews in one day this didn’t happen. Now I want to focus instead on doubling the number of pageviews a day instead of for the month.
Takeaway: If I am going to set number goals for myself I need to look at the numbers and what makes sense. Then set my goals based on that information.
My search engine optimization was sporadic at best this month and I know why. I hate doing SEO! I find it tedious and boring! I don’t like figuring out the keywords or optimizing the headline. It is not fun for me and it was the first thing to go this month.
Takeaway: It’s hard to do the things we have to do in our business that we hate to do. I think we have to decide what items from that list that are critical to our success. Then decide if we are going to do them or contract them out. As for me and SEO I have to do it. I think if I educated myself more on the process it would be easier to do. Or maybe less painful.
Goals for March
March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Sounds good to me! I am ready to make this month better than the last. How about you?
1. Double my daily average pageviews from 100 to 200.
- Do 4 guest posts. This is getting the most eyes on my blog.
- Continue to send new post alerts to my current emails subscribers
- Post consistently on social media but do it using a planned weekly editorial calendar.
- Ask people to share my posts on social media
- Update my LinkedIn profile
- Complete one full board on Pinterest of my blog posts
- Improve linking between all my posts
- Leave comment on posts on other sites. Only do this if I really have something to add to the conversation.
2. Add 100 new subscribers to my email list
Last month my goal was 50 new email subscribers. Last month I got 101 email subscribers. I want to see if I can replicate that result.
- For every guest blog post I do, create a custom landing page with an email sign up form.
- Promote list on social media.
- Add list sign up to Marketing Ideas for Agents Facebook page.
- Create a Pinterest board with my free reports
- Ask current subscribers to forward my emails to their real estate colleagues
- Contact past clients and ask them to join my list
3. Be more intentional about my weeks and days.
- Plan out my goals for the following week every Friday
- Have dedicated research and writing days
- Schedule my blog education
- Plan out my social media posts
4. Add more clients to my business.
- Research ideas for an accountability coaching group
- Do three one hour “Ask Jen” consulting sessions
- Hold three local meetings to discuss speaking opportunities
5. Enhance the blog
This month I am going to create an audio podcast of my blog! I am excited and nervous about this. I think it is the next natural step for this blog to take. I want to record what I write and begin to interview agents that are having success in their business. Look for a huge announcement from me once this happens!
- 4 marketing posts
- 3 personal development posts
- 1 goal setting & recap (this post!)
- 4 guest posts (Two for Inman and two for Katie Lance!)
I have a lot of work to do for this month and I am taking a vacation the first week of March. It will be challenging but I am up for it! How about you? How does your plan for March look? Please tell me about it in the comments below or shoot me an email!
