The beginning of the month is here which means its time for what worked and what didn’t work for business this month! My goal with this post is to be transparent with you about what I am doing to market my blog and services. I hope you can relate my ideas to your business and use these them to grow your business!
First lets take a look at the numbers:
Stats for May
|Returning Visitor %||47.10%||32.05%||20.23%||-11.82%|
The numbers for the blog have gone down for the last couple months. The reason behind this is my focus has not been on the blog or writing as much. I am working fast and furious to finish writing my landing page class. It is my number one priority right now.
*I also discovered a problem with my bounce rate. It was artificially low because I had my Google Analytics code in my website twice. Ooops!
The numbers are a perfect example of what happens when you change your priorities. I think this happens to us all when we get busy. I have learned that if I am focusing on writing the class I don’t have time to do much else. Isn’t that true of all marketing? You get busy with closing transactions and the marketing falls by the wayside. Then you have to reboot it again when business gets slow.
The blog is starting to generate income which is awesome! But it is another reason I haven’t written as much. I am working more with coaching clients and doing website and marketing reviews. Spending time with clients has meant less time for the blog.
My landing pages continue to work for me and generate leads. I love that even when I am not promoting myself my landing pages are still capturing leads for me. I average about 5 new email sign ups a day through the landing pages. They are definitely my number one source of generating business.
I was invited to speak at the Staten Island Board of Realtors Global Resource Real Estate Symposium this fall. I am beyond excited about this opportunity! I will be presenting on millennials and their impact on the global real estate economy. I will also be moderating a panel of millennials to get their opinions.
When Faye called me to talk to me about this opportunity I was thrilled to learn that she found me through one of my landing pages! I have this great opportunity to speak and meet new people all because of my millennial landing page. Faye was Googling “millennials and real estate marketing” and my landing page popped up. Like I tell my students landing pages are great for SEO and they are great for building credibility. This speaking engagement is proof of that.
I will say it again landing pages work people. If you put time and effort into building one and creating the right opt-in offer you will get leads. Who knows you might also get other opportunities like I did!

I definitely have a pin on Pinterest that is going viral. It is fun to get notifications every day that someone has repinned my closing gifts post. It has made that post the number one post on my blog. Pinterest is awesome for generating new pageviews to my blog.
In April I worked hard to develop the services that I offer to real estate agents. I hated that I couldn’t tell people how I could help them. That changed in May when I added some of my services to the blog. It was amazing that once I got clear on what I do that I immediately started to get business. I am so very grateful for that!
I also have to say that I am not just grateful for the financial rewards but the intrinsic rewards too. It is incredible to see the changes my coaching clients are making in their businesses! Through our coaching sessions they are staying accountable to meeting their marketing goals. It is even more fun to see the business they are starting to get as a result of working together. It has also been fun to work with review clients on ways they can improve their marketing and their websites. But most of all I am just happy that I can help people. That feels great!
I finally took the time to change my photo on my blog, email signature and social media! That other photo was five years old and I was in desperate need of a new one. I included this in the what worked category because I actually got good feedback on the photo. People emailed me saying how much they loved the new photo and liked that I made the change. That was kind of cool!
What Didn’t Work
My Kids’ Schedules
As I sit here thinking about May and where it went I realized where I spent a lot of time. With my kids. It feels wrong to include this in the what didn’t work category but spending more time with my kids meant less time working. It didn’t work for the business, but it worked for me and most importantly for them. I have a school aged daughter and two toddlers. Between daycare closing every Friday in May and being closed the last week of May I was in full-time mom mode. Add to that the end of the school year craziness with multiple field trips and I am amazed I got done what I did.
At the end of the day my family is my number one priority. I feel they suffer so much because I do work a lot. Yes they are the reason I am trying to build a business that is flexible, but I also know that I am not as present as I should be. It felt really good to give more back to them this month and just focus on being a mom for a while. That being said I am looking forward to everyone being back in daycare this week!
At the beginning of the month I tried out a new email system called GetResponse. I am frustrated with a few features that AWeber doesn’t offer. It also is starting to feel dated to me. Well I learned my lesson with GetResponse! I sent out two emails with them and my deliverability rates tanked! What that means is that a large percentage of my email subscribers didn’t get my email. Not good! I am bummed about this because I think GetResponse has some features that are better than AWeber. But those features don’t make up for bad deliverability.
I got lazy with my social media this month. I didn’t post my blog posts on a consistent schedule at all. I think that also hurt my pageviews. It is a lot of work to put together a social media calendar and it wasn’t a priority this month. Basically when I wasn’t with my kids I was writing the landing page class or working with a client. Everything else suffered this month and that includes social media.
I have deviated from my original plan of posting every Monday and Thursday. I have also deviated from sending out a full blown marketing tips email every Thursday. The balance of getting business and blogging is hard. It was easy to stick to this schedule when I said it was the only thing I would focus on. I want to get back to this schedule and be more diligent. I want to make blogging the number one priority again. I miss writing and miss connecting with my readers. I also think this lack of consistency has hurt my blog numbers. I hate that.
Haha! Yeah not even close on getting anything done for my blogging class! I really didn’t have the time and again it wasn’t a priority.
For June I am going to be more realistic about my goals. I think I make a laundry list too big of all the things I want to tackle and then I get down when I get behind on my goals. I preach to my coaching clients to not take on too much yet I am guilty of doing that to myself.

There are some new changes that are going on in the business and in my life that I am excited to share! First my husband, Bill, has started to work in the business with me part-time. Our goal is to both run the business full-time and we decided to take the small leap now. Bill is working as the project manager and will also help me sell the services for the business. We are a week into working together and so far so good. It is fun to have a common goal outside of our family and kids!
The other change is personal in nature that affects the business. This summer I will be home with my kids part-time and not sending them to daycare full-time. I feel like I am missing so much of their lives so Bill and I made the decision to keep them home a couple of days a week. I am nervous for the change and how it will affect the growth of my business. But my family is my “why” and the most important piece of my life. I knew I had to try something new for them and for me. I am hopeful that I can create a schedule that will work for them, for me and for the business. We will see!
I am looking forward to June and hope you are too! We are halfway through the year when this month is over. How is your year going and are you meeting your goals? Please share your thoughts with me in the comments below!
